Platamon Castle
The Guardian of Macedonia with a View of the Aegean

Platamon Castle is one of the most important and best-preserved medieval castles in Greece, and certainly one of the most iconic landmarks of Pieria. Built in a strategic location, at the foothills of Mount Olympus and above the seaside town of Platamonas, the castle offers breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea, the Thermaic Gulf, and the hinterland of Macedonia.

The castle’s history begins in the early 13th century, when the Crusaders of the Fourth Crusade established the Latin Kingdom of Thessalonica and built the fortress to control the narrow pass of Tempi — a natural gateway linking Macedonia to southern Greece. It was likely constructed on earlier foundations, dating back to ancient and Byzantine times. The site was chosen for its defensive advantages, as it overlooked the vital Via Militaris road and functioned as a key military outpost against enemy invasions.

The impressive fortification complex spans an area of about 30 acres. Its outer wall, up to 9 meters high, encloses the castle in an irregular polygonal shape, reinforced with towers and bastions. Inside, the most prominent feature is the central round tower — the castle’s hallmark — which served both as a watchtower and a refuge during sieges. Visitors can explore the ramparts, walk through the inner courtyards, see remnants of ancient dwellings and cisterns, and admire the raw power and simplicity of medieval military architecture.

Today, Platamon Castle is not only a monument of historical significance but also a vibrant cultural venue. During the summer, it hosts various cultural events, including concerts, theatrical performances, and festivals as part of the Olympus Festival, drawing thousands of visitors who enjoy art and history in a truly unique setting.

Access to the castle is easy, either via the Old National Road or from the town of Platamonas, with parking and well-maintained walking paths available. A visit to the castle can be combined with a stroll through the traditional town, dining at local tavernas, or a swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Thermaic Gulf.

Platamon Castle is far more than just a historical attraction — it’s a living monument that reveals the strategic importance of the region, highlights Pieria’s cultural heritage, and offers visitors a rich experience that blends history, nature, and tradition.
