Mountainous Pieria
Olympus
The mountain of the gods
Olympus, “the mountain of the gods”, the source of ancient myths and the highest mountain in Greece, dominates the borders of Thessaly and Macedonia with its imposing, solid mountain mass. Full of deep ravines, high peaks that reach up to 2,918 meters (“Mytikas” peak), and countless paths from which many brave people have walked, the first National Park of the country, an area with great biodiversity, stands like a giant tower, with its circular shape that extends to a perimeter of 150 kilometers.
The Pierian Mountains
The mountain of the Muses and the magical paths
North of Olympus and as a continuation of its ridge there are the Pieria Mountains, a verdant, extensive mountain range. The dense forest of Pieria, with deciduous, coniferous (beech, black and red pines, oaks, chestnuts), shrubs and rare wildflowers offers some of the most beautiful mountain routes in Greece and is easily accessible from all sides. The highest peak (“Flambouro”) reaches 2,188 meters, but the charm of the mountain comes mainly from its natural beauty and its amazing trails.
Traditional Villages
The traditional villages which are dotted across Mount Olympus and the Pieria Mountains are easily accessible and lie only a few kilometers from both Katerini and the coastline. They are famed for their excellent cuisine and comfortable accommodation. You will be rewarded with the exceptional natural landscape. Surrounded as they are by impressive forests, they stand out for their interesting Macedonian architecture, where stone is the main building material, and have managed to keep alive aspects of traditional life.
